10 Years of EasyJet Flights from Gatwick
Mar 02, 2012

Last week Easyjet celebrated a decade of operating low-cost flights from London Gatwick Airport, among them flights to Seville, Barcelona and Fuerteventura.

EasyJet transported more than 70 million passengers to destinations in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East from London Gatwick in the last decade. The carrier now offers some 300 flights per day from Gatwick and has more than 1,800 staff based at the airport to help make passengers’ enjoyment of their EasyJet experience even better.

Seville Airport was among ten new routes from Gatwick that were added only last year. The carrier is now regarded as the largest airline operating from Gatwick. EasyJet not only offers flights for tourists – and the last two years have seen at least a 7.5% increase of tourist numbers to Spain – but business travel destinations are also constantly added.

Frequency of such flights is constantly updated, as in the case of Barcelona for example, where now 6 daily flights start from Gatwick.

At the company’s AGM the Chairman Sir Michael Rake issued a statement saying that the company had had a record year in 2011 with the best operation performance to date and the highest ever passenger numbers having been achieved.

EasyJet and Ryanair were among the most important airlines that offered a rescue flight package to passengers stranded across Europe, when Spanair collapsed at the end of last year and the company offered rescue flights costing EUR 50.00 to passengers affected by Spanair’s demise.

Despite a 2% drop in passenger numbers Ryanair, Easyjet’s fiercest rival, reported a EUR 14.9 million net profit for the last quarter of 2011 with 16.7 million passengers using Ryanair (down from 17 million in 2010). EasyJet on the other hand saw its passenger numbers go up by 8.1% and an increase in revenue by 16.7% in the last quarter of 2011. In total EasyJet transported 12.9 million passengers during that period.

TUIfly, Vueling, Air Berlin, Brussels Airlines and Air Europe are among the other budget airlines operating from Seville Airport. With EasyJet planning to increase the number of business travellers for all their routes, it will be interesting to see, if car hire companies will follow suit and offer far more Premium and Luxury vehicles in their car rental fleets, given the recent shortage of rental cars being offered in Spain.
